Viking Age Icelandic Wolf Cloak Pin

Viking Age Icelandic Wolf Cloak Pin

(2 customer reviews)

Material: Bronze (solid cast)

Size: 50mm tall, 50mm wide, 3mm thick and a 68mm long tongue.

The brooch you will receive is made of solid bronze and features historical icelandic wolf terminal heads.

This specific style of brooch, known as a penannular brooch, has been found all over ancient Europe and was used widely throughout the Iron Age all the way through the Middle Ages.

The Celts and Vikings were all known for their elaborate penannular brooches, which were usually used to fasten outerwear, such as a cloak, about the body. In fact, brooches were often the most common piece of jewelry worn, as they were the first and most prominent accessory someone could see while wearing layers of clothing.

Vikings would have used a piece like this as a fasteners for woolen square cloaks. These pieces of heavy cloth were usually worn folded around the shoulders and fastened at the right shoulder so that a weapon could easily be drawn with the right arm through the gap in the cloth.

Beautiful high-quality brooch, exactly as described. The wolf design makes it unique, couldn't find anything else quite like it. Shipped really fast! My boyfriend loves it, thank you!
